Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said the State Bureau of Investigation will begin looking into the African and Afro-American studies department at UNC.
Woodall said he asked the SBI to review the department in a meeting Monday and had no comment as to what the University’s involvement is up to this point.
The SBI probe comes after the University completed its own investigation into the department. Jonathan Hartlyn, senior associate dean for social sciences and global programs, and William Andrews, senior associate dean for fine arts and humanities, conducted the University’s investigation.
Hartlyn and Andrews reported finding irregularities within the department — including issues with professor oversight of summer school courses and poor record-keeping practices.
Former Department Chair Julius Nyang’oro was sited in the report as being involved with the department irregularities and will retire from the University, effective July 1.
