The U.S. Department of Education awarded 10 historically black colleges and universities in the state more than $29 million last week.

The federal grant program, known as Title III, aims to close the historical gap between colleges and traditionally majority schools.
Institutions may use the funding for curriculum reform and teacher education programs, among other things.
