Super PAC Donations
A super PAC called the N.C. Judicial Coalition has made significant advertising purchases on behalf of Paul Newby, according to The (Raleigh) News & Observer.
The N.C. Judicial Coalition is officially bipartisan but includes Republican leaders.
A super PAC can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money for a cause, but cannot coordinate with a campaign.

Though a non-partisan body, the N.C. Supreme Court justices currently fall 4-3 in favor of conservative decisions, The News & Observer reports.
Newby is considered right-leaning while Sam Ervin is considered left-leaning.
“Candidates are not involved and have no control over the creation or message of super PACs or the decision of individuals to support them,” Newby wrote in response to a The Daily Tar Heel survey.
“I’m honored that these individuals, including prominent lawyers, have reviewed my eight year record and believe me to be worthy of re-election,” he wrote.
