When news broke this afternoon that Chapel Hill institution Pepper’s Pizza was closing, social media platforms erupted with thousands of tweets and comments — the most The Daily Tar Heel’s feed had seen since Gumby’s closed in the fall.
The initial reaction was one of shock. Many Chapel Hill residents and alumni had had no idea the restaurant was going to close, sending people into a flurry as they debated rushing to Pepper’s for one last slice. Soon, Twitter was dominated by memories of people’s visits to the local pizzeria, known for its distinctive atmosphere, signature pies and, according to many, its poppy-seed dressing.
