As a task force and outside experts continue to engage in a multi-pronged approach to reforming the sexual assault policy at UNC-CH, the UNC Board of Governors will be joining the conversation.
UNC system president Tom Ross announced a new UNC system campus security initiative Friday at the board’s meeting in Chapel Hill.
The review will involve consultation with outside experts to address several key areas — including the policies, procedures and practices for addressing sexual assault, the work functions of campus police departments and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of campus crimes.
“It is beyond our power to completely shield our campus community from violence in our society, particularly while maintaining … openness,” Ross said at the meeting. “(But) we must do everything feasible to ensure … the rights of individuals are respected.”
The announcement came as UNC-CH’s Sexual Assault Task Force conducts thorough evaluations of University policy and Elizabeth City State University undergoes a review by the State Board of Investigation for more than 120 reports since 2007 of crimes on campus uninvestigated by school police.
Ross said the process will include looking into the appropriate role of students and faculty in adjucating cases of sexual assault.
He added that he hopes to have a set of policy recommendations related to the initiative presented to the board later this year.
