Sophomore forward Xylina McDaniel and freshman guard Diamond Deshields of the North Carolina women’s basketball team were named to the John R. Wooden Award Women’s Player of the
Year Preseason Top-30 list.
Deshields was highly touted coming out of high school and earned the 2013 Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year as well as many other accolades. Before coming to UNC, Deshields won a
FIBA gold medal with the under-17 USA women’s team in 2012.
McDaniel was the 2013 ACC Rookie of the Year, the first UNC women’s basketball player to garner
the award since 2004. She started 33 games and averaged 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds.
