District attorney will seek death penalty in Chapel Hill shooting

Craig Hicks was indicted on three counts of first-degree murder.

The Durham County District Attorney’s will seek the death penalty for Craig Hicks, 46, who was indicted on three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Deah Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, 19.

The three were shot dead in their apartment on Feb.10 in Finley Forest Condominiums in Chapel Hill.

Durham County District Attorney Roger Echols filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty on Wednesday.

Hicks, whose case was appointed to Assistant Capital Defender Stephen Freedman, is next scheduled to appear in court in early April.
