John Fennebresque, the chairperson of the UNC-system Board of Governors, has announced his resignation, effective immediately, according to a news release sent out today.
This comes just three days after the board elected Margaret Spellings to replace ousted Tom Ross as the new UNC-system president, the end to an unpopular search process criticized on and off the board. Rumors flew about Fennebresque being replaced due to the closed-door nature of the search process
"With the search completed, I believe now is the time for a fresh start for our University system and its 17 campuses, as well as for this Board of Governors," Fennebresque said in a statement. "So, today, I am stepping down from the Board to make way for and encourage new leadership. Significant challenges lie ahead for the system as it continues to provide the unparalleled education our students deserve."
W. Louis Bissette Jr., the vice chairperson on the board, will act as chairperson until a replacement is elected, according to the news release.
