UNC football dismantles The Citadel, 41-7, in bounceback game

The North Carolina football team defeated The Citadel Bulldogs 41-7 on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Redshirt junior Mitch Trubisky led the Tar Heels with 184 passing yards and three passing touchdowns.

What happened?

North Carolina started fast and never let up. Tight end Brandon Fritts was the first to score, hauling in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky in the first quarter. It was Fritts’ first touchdown of the year.

Things were looking good after Trubisky connected with Ryan Switzer for a 72-yard touchdown pass that made it 14-0 later in the quarter. From there, the Tar Heels cruised. T.J. Logan made a sensational one-handed catch to give the Tar Heels a 23-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Dominique Green then got the Tar Heels’ first interception of the year and returned it for another score on the Bulldogs’ ensuing drive. To close out the half, Nick Weiler nailed a 23-yard field goal to put the Tar Heels up 31-0.

Logan led off the second half with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Weiler added another field goal, this time from 41 yards out, to put the Tar Heels up 41-0.

The Citadel did score on a 28-yard scamper from Grant Drakeford in the fourth quarter, but it was far too little and far too late in the game to make a difference.

Who stood out?

The Tar Heel defense stepped up Saturday. North Carolina finally got an interception, even though it was the last Division-I team to get one this season. After scoring his touchdown, Green got a high-five from just about everyone on the Tar Heel bench for breaking the streak.

UNC also recovered three fumbles. Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik should feel really good about the four turnovers his defense forced.

When was it decided?

North Carolina won the coin toss at the beginning of the game and deferred to the second half, as it usually does under Coach Larry Fedora. That allowed the Tar Heels to receive the opening kick of the second half, and T.J. Logan took it from there. He returned the kickoff 100 yards, giving the Tar Heels a 38-0 lead and effectively ending any hopes The Citadel had of a comeback.

With Logan’s fourth kickoff return for a touchdown in his career, he passed Brandon Tate and now owns the school record for kickoff-return touchdowns.

Why does it matter?

North Carolina won its eighth game of the season Saturday. The Tar Heels came in as heavy favorites and took care of business, as they knew they had to do, against a Bulldog team that came into the matchup with a 10-0 record.

The win also helps North Carolina regain any of the team’s momentum that was lost after the 28-27 defeat suffered last week to Duke. After that game, Coach Larry Fedora spoke of focusing each week on just going 1-0, and beating the opponent in front of them. The Tar Heels did just that Saturday in dominant fashion.

Who do they play next?

North Carolina plays the N.C. State Wolfpack on Friday at noon. It’s senior day for the Tar Heels in their last game of the regular season.
