With President Trump in the news every day, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do.
The United States Congress goes into recess next week. From Feb. 18 to 26, officials from the House and the Senate should be back in their home states meeting with constituents. In a number of states, members of Congress have announced they will be speaking at town hall meetings open to the public. We call upon the North Carolina delegation, especially Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, to announce, publicize and hold open town halls.
Now, we understand that town halls, like the one held by Utah’s Jason Chaffetz, have been rowdy affairs lately. Disruption can be useful in certain instances, but we are asking for people to simply go speak with their representatives. If our representatives refuse to listen we can discuss other means, but for now, advocacy is best.
Even if you live in a predominantly single-party area and you generally feel well represented, attending town halls is still a great way to show support for your representative.
As Rousseau told us, sovereign people can never be fully represented in a democracy.
That said, we must still try to hold our elected leaders to high standards. If we cannot even make an effort to do so, then this country could get a lot worse.
Remember, 2018 is coming. A lot of politicians will be up for re-election. Let’s show them what people really want and need.
