WXYC turned 40 years old recently, which is a long time for a student organization to continuously operate. If you assume every student gets an average of four years here, that is roughly 10 generations of DJs who have worked at UNC’s only student-run radio station. This editorial board would like to extend our thanks and admiration to WXYC.
Any Tar Heel who has ever driven into town late at night or early in the morning knows that WXYC is always awake to provide you with a wide variety of music on their channel at 89.3 FM.
While the music is the end product and what the radio station is most known for, focusing only on the music would miss the great work WXYC does in engaging its larger community and, more importantly, highlighting music from underappreciated artistic circles.
Radio remains the key driving force behind musical trends, but most mainstream stations only focus on certain sounds and artists. But at WXYC, you get to discover new music from new groups you might have never heard if it were not for our great student radio station.
As this editorial concludes, if you’re a student we encourage you to step away from Spotify or Pandora and consider listening to your fellow students at WXYC while you study. If you’re driving into Chapel Hill to visit or for the big game coming up, switch off your “dad rock” station and listen to a true UNC station.
