Why we disabled comments

For much of the evening Tuesday, "Two more students arrested for cocaine" was the most commented story on dailytarheel.com. It fell in the most commented rankings as we moderated and removed comments, and eventually we disabled commenting on the story altogether.

Why we decided to post the 911 tape

The decision to post the 911 call placed by Courtland Smith was not an automatic one, and I knew it would be controversial. We owe it to the community to explain why we did.

We did not post the tape for shock value or to boost our Web page views. That would go against everything we stand for at The Daily Tar Heel.

We got pranked

A few thousand copies of The Daily Tar Heel this morning were wrapped in a spoof version of our front page, labeling itself as the "special anti-racist issue."

We just want to let you know that the DTH had absolutely nothing to do with it. The actions this morning are illegal and a violation of the Honor Code, and appropriate measures will be taken.

Breaking the news broke our Web site

We told you earlier that we want dailytarheel.com to be the place you go when there’s news you need to know.

Monday, many of you tried, but likely had problems loading and viewing the site. We know we did here in the newsroom.
