DTH at a Glance

Endorse me on LinkedIn for sleeping through important things.

With Hurricane Joaquin looming, I think it's only fair to recount my first experience with a hurricane (or at least the first I remember). The year was 1999. My family was living in one of the 45 houses we moved between in Delaware, and Hurricane Floyd was all the rage. I still fondly look back on the grating warning sounds every news source played when we turned on the TV. And it was… wet? OK, in all honesty, my first encounter with a hurricane was completely sleeping through the entirety of a storm with 130 mph winds.

Weirdly foreshadowing of yesterday morning, when I slept through six alarms.

Note: As a part of the closest thing to math or science I've done in three years, I'd love for you to fill out this survey to let us know how we're doing with DTH at a Glance. This is your chance to drag me, point out yesterday's misspelling of "Glasgow" or tell my editor I deserve a living wage. All up to you.

And as always, you can subscribe to our glass menagerie of newsletters here.

QUICK HITS

  • Thanks to a recent legislative change, TOPO Distillery just passed out the first bottle of liquor to be sold outside the ABC Commission in our state in more than 100 years. What a time to be alive.
  • The University provides undergrads with information on sexual assault, but resources are slim for UNC's graduate students.
  • As we prepare for Saturday's football game against Georgia Tech, here are some things we recommend looking for.

IN STATE NEWS

A bill passed Tuesday cracks down hard on undocumented immigrants in North Carolina. In addition to forbidding "sanctuary cities," which enforce federal immigration laws more loosely, N.C. House Bill 318 limits forms of ID that illegal immigrants can use, sparking fear and concern from immigrants and their loved ones.

IN UNAFFORDABLE EDUCATION

A federal loan program that's existed since 1958 just expired in Congress. Legislators hope to replace the Federal Perkins Loan Program with simpler programs, but in the meantime, UNC is left to develop alternative funds to cover students. The average per person amount for a Perkins loan is about $2,500.

IN PROBABLE CERTAINTIES

UNC has seen a decrease in alcohol-related arrests and an increase in drug-related arrests this year. While this blip might not be statistically significant in the long run, one thing is probably certain: Most of the arrests happen on a particular street on a particular day in October. And if you take away nothing else from this article, just know that the Department of Housing and Residential Education has banned water pong.

IN OUR OPINION

UNC should provide financial aid opportunities for LGBT students who are rejected by their families. Prejudice against the queer community is still prevalent in our state, country and families, and UNC has a responsibility to support its students, especially when their parents will not. All of us worked hard to get ourselves here — we all deserve to stay.

IN THE BLOGS

As you're prepping for Hurricane Joaquin, keep these things in mind. OK, you can find recommended safety procedures anywhere, but only we can offer you tips on what you definitely shouldn't do in a hurricane. Stock up on your wind chimes and rain boots, Tar Heels.

Read a staff writer's live blog of watching "Game of Thrones" for the first time. She was driven by FOMO. She spelled Khaleesi three different ways in one blog. The gratuitous violence confused her almost as much as Daenerys' hair color. And she promises to be on season three by Sunday.
