Terrapins edge UNC soccer team in overtime, 1-0

After thwarting the Maryland attack at every turn for 97 minutes, North Carolina goalkeeper Scott Goodwin finally let a ball get past him on a 98th-minute deflection from Maryland freshman Schillo Tshuma in overtime at Ludwig Field in College Park on Friday.

Goodwin had eight saves in the 1-0 loss against the top-ranked Terrapins (13-0-1, 6-0-0), who outshot No. 2 UNC 16 to six on a night when a rain-soaked field slowed the ball and kept players from finding firm footing.

After playing the ball out to the left side of the 18-yard box to teammate Patrick Mullins, Tshuma slipped past the defense and tapped the ball past Goodwin.

Maryland had dominated possession in the first half, holding the Tar Heels (11-2-1, 4-1-1) to only one shot.

The Terrapins applied pressure to the UNC midfield, disrupting passes and keeping the team from finding a rhythm.

But UNC still had its chances to create a goal against the Terrapins.

Late in the first half, freshman Danny Garcia scrambled past a fallen defender and sent a ball across the goal mouth to the foot of a sliding Rob Lovejoy, but Lovejoy couldn’t connect toward the goal, knocking the ball into the air.

In the 63rd minute, sophomore midfielder Verneri Valimaa ripped a shot off the post from beyond the 18-yard box.

After withstanding the Terrapins’ barrage of shots, the game seemed to fall to the Tar Heels with 93 seconds remaining, when Lovejoy was awarded a penalty kick after being tackled in the box.

Maryland goalkeeper Keith Cardona sniffed out Lovejoy’s shot, easily punching the ball away to his right before quickly recomposing himself to save a rebound shot.

Junior forward Andy Craven tipped a Mikey Lopez shot off the post in the 94th minute before Tshuma’s eventual winner.

The Terrapins have beaten the Tar Heels six straight times in College Park.
