After two seasons as a midfielder with the North Carolina men’s soccer team, Mikey Lopez was selected by Sporting Kansas City in the first round of Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft.
Sporting selected Lopez with the 14th pick making him the tenth Tar Heel to be picked in the first round since 2000.
The Mission, Texas, native scored five goals and added five assists in his career at UNC. After the 2012 season, Lopez signed a contract with Generation Adidas signaling his decision to forgo the remainder of his amateur career.
He was the last Generation Adidas player selected in this year’s draft.
At Sporting, Lopez will join former Tar Heel Kerry Zavagnin. Zavagin is an assistant coach in Kansas City and played at UNC from 1992-95.
Following the draft, Lopez will be on his way to Mexico for training with the U-20 U.S. National Team.
