Staff writer Maggie Monsrud volunteers at the Orange County Animal Shelter. Each week, she will write about a dog at the shelter who's up for adoption. You can visit the shelter's website here and see last week's post here.
Howdy folks!
This week, I have the pleasure of introducing you to two dogs that I have absolutely fallen in love with at the shelter.
Maggie
Breed: German Shepherd mix
Age: 2 years
Gender: Female
Has been at the shelter since November 9th.
Jake
Breed: Akita mix
Age: 9 months
Gender: Male
Has been at the shelter since November 14th.
I had the chance to spend a great deal of time with these two on Friday. The UNC organization Helping Paws held an event at Craige dorm during which students could come and play with Maggie and Jake in order to de-stress from impeding finals.
Maggie and Jake got along great together. Jake was such a puppy, and I’m not simply trying to state the obvious. What I mean by this is that he had so much energy. He was jumping, barking and tugging at the leash. Even with this crazy behavior, Maggie wasn’t angry with Jake. Their behavior on Friday was a great example of how well they get along with other dogs, a quality that is sometimes hard to find.
Maggie was a little scared by the construction going on nearby, but I took her to a quiet spot for a little while and she calmed down a great deal. Jake and Maggie were both very friendly with the students.
They whole-heartedly loved the car ride over and did what dogs often do: stick their heads out the window and sniff all of the smells that the world has to offer.
But on the ride back, Jake, having spent all of his energy running around jumping on people, completely passed out.
Maggie is a great dog, but can get a little overwhelmed in big crowds or with loud noises. Maggie would be great for a family that is looking for a calm dog, but is also understanding of her fears of loud noises and crowds.
Jake was also well behaved, but because he’s a puppy he still needs a little bit of training. Jake would be great for anyone that can put aside some time everyday to take him on long walks so he can work off all the energy he has.
If you’re interested in adopting either Maggie or Jake, please visit Maggie’s OCAS page here and Jake’s OCAS page here.
