The Spotted Dog restaurant in Carrboro has something to offer everyone, whether you are a meat eater or a plant eater.
This cozy little restaurant looks particularly small from the outside, but once you step through the front doors, the building expands like something out of Harry Potter.
My taste buds were instantly drooling over the Veggie BBQ, which consisted of homemade veggie barbecue, beer battered french fries, cole slaw and hush puppies.
But the tasty dishes did not stop there. They have Buffalo Mac-n-Cheese, with a vegetarian option, “Carolina” Pub Burger, with a vegetarian option and Spicy Chicken Fried Rice, with a vegan option.
For those of you who haven’t tried mock meat before…do it. In the words of Shia Lebeouf, “Just do it.”
Your mind is tricked into thinking that you’re actually eating meat, but this meatless version is much tastier.
My carnivorous and mostly picky friend, Margarita Gjoni, ordered the Buffalo Mac-n-Cheese minus the buffalo sauce, onions, tomatoes, and green bell peppers.
Yes, there were actually ingredients left in her dish (cheese, chicken, celery and bacon) and yes, they made her order exactly how she wanted it.
Margarita said the macaroni was super filling, but in a good way.
“I didn’t even eat the whole thing and I never leave leftovers,” she said. “The blue cheese gave a unique taste to it.”
Margarita said even though she took so much off of the original dish, there was still so much flavor.
The prices of each dish weren’t actually tailored for a college student’s wallet…the cheapest dish on the dinner menu was $10 and the most expensive dish was about $14.
Was it worth the price, you ask? Yes, definitely. If you’re a vegetarian, or even if you’re a carnivore curious about trying mock meat, this is the place to do it.
