TO THE EDITOR:
After reading Michael Foote’s letter on Monday (“Nightmare gun rights logic is twisted and outdated”), my first thought was that Mr. Foote had originally intended to have his letter published on April Fool’s Day.
After all, how else can anyone with a straight face condemn citizens from seeking to protect themselves when facing an armed and potentially dangerous criminal? I suppose in Mr. Foote’s ideal world, criminals may be friendly, unarmed people who never wish to do any harm, but in the world that the rest of us live in, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
In England earlier this year, police officials were forced to warn residents not to install wire mesh in their windows because doing so could injure burglars who frequently smash in unprotected windows in order to gain access to homes and storage units.
While this logic may appear ludicrous to some, this is exactly the type of logic that Mr. Foote proposed in his anti-Second Amendment letter on Monday.
Let’s just hope that for everyone’s sake, our society will continue to value the rights of individual citizens to life and liberty over the rights of criminals to harm and maim us without fear of retribution.
