The local environment

Sharon Cook
  • Establish safe sidewalks to encourage walking and biking.
  • Protect the water supply, starting with Bolin Creek protections.
Jaquie Gist
  • Advocate for the protection of locals watersheds.
  • Avoid making it easier to drive downtown, to promote alternative transportation.
Randee Haven-O'Donnell
  • Specifically protect the Bolin Creek with regards to the new greenway.
  • Protect Carrboro's rural buffer.
Tim Peck
  • Consider supporting a no-driving day to expose the reliance on cars.
  • Aim to add more space for bike lanes and sidewalks, over widening roads.
Sammy Slade
  • Create a year-by-year plan to 2020 to lower emissions.
  • Support local food production to lower transportation costs on the environment.

 

Town growth

  • Look to develop along the Eubanks Road corridor.
  • Place high density housing near places of employment and transit lines.

  • Protect the status of downtown "buffer" neighborhoods.
  • Make sure newly allowed five-story buildings downtown don't have a negative impact.

  • Support local business with the Local Living Economy Taskforce.
  • Invest in mixed-use developments centered on transit hubs.

  • Higher density building, for both residential and commercial property.
  • Attract "hands-on" businesses, not just office jobs.

The immigrant population

  • Provide more bilingual support to make it easier for Spanish speakers to conduct business with the town.
  • Focus on improving educational opportunities for Carrboro’s Burmese and Karen populations.
Jaquie Gist
  • Incorporate Latino residents by distributing bilingual emergency information.
  • Continue to support current policies that limit local police officers checking for immigration status.
Randee Haven-O'Donnell
  • Increase government support to Latino organizations already in the community.
  • Support the creation of a workforce station for day laborers to gather.

  • Support allowing driver’s licenses for day laborers.
  • Support day laborers in the community by continuing to allow them to gather.

  • Create a forum where day laborers looking for work can find businesses that are hiring.
