2010 student body elections

If a new bill passes Student Congress, students might have witnessed in February the last student body president runoff in UNC history.

Members of the rules and judiciary committee are tweaking legislation that could change the way students elect the person who serves as their representative to the administration and the voice of the student body.

Student Congress candidate Taylor Ann Holgate filed her second complaint on Saturday to the Student Supreme Court, requesting a re-vote of the District 5 election.

Student Congress candidate Taylor Ann Holgate has filed a complaint with the Student Supreme Court against Board of Elections Chairman Peter Gillooly, requesting that the Feb. 9 results for the District 5 Student Congress elections be invalidated.

Hogan Medlin won the student body president runoff election Tuesday night, maintaining his status as the election’s front-runner when he swept to a substantial victory over Shruti Shah.

Medlin received 61 percent of the vote, while Shah received 39 percent. All results are preliminary until the Board of Elections certification, which must occur by Saturday.

Hogan Medlin was elected the next student body president this evening, defeating Shruti Shah in a runoff with 61 percent of the vote.

Medlin received 3,356 of the 5,499 total cast votes, which is a significant drop from the 9,513 votes cast for last year's runoff candidates.

In today’s election, students will pick the person who will be their voice to UNC administration — and also decide the course for the future of student government.

Juniors Hogan Medlin and Shruti Shah will compete in a runoff election today to be the next student body president, the primary student liaison to the administration.

CORRECTION 2:30 P.M. Feb. 16: Due to reporting errors, this story originally reported that Student Supreme Court Chief Justice Emma Hodson said that the Student Code provides "adequate guidelines" for technical problems and that Board of Elections Chairman Pete Gillooly followed them. She said neither. Hodson did say the code provides guidelines for technical voting problems, but she gave no opinion on the adequacy of the provision. This story also incorrectly reported that Hodson said students might not have been aware of paper ballots. She said students were not made aware of certain provisions of the Student Code, not paper ballots.

CLARIFICATION: This story originally said that the Student Supreme Court decided in the case filed against the Board of Elections. Chief Justice Emma Hodson decided the matter in a pretrial hearing that did not include other court members. Hodson acts on behalf of the court.

Several candidates for various student government offices received fines from the Board of Elections for failure to follow procedures. Board Chairman Pete Gillooly said the fines would be deducted from the candidates’ accounts but that none would affect their certifications.

The Board of Elections has certified most of the results from Tuesday’s election, providing official recognition of the results.

Candidates for Student Congress districts one and five will not be certified until the lawsuit against Board of Elections Chairman Pete Gillooly is resolved. Below are the candidates certified in the other races:

The Board of Elections has been prevented from certifying the results of two races in Tuesday’s election.

The Student Supreme Court granted motions for an injunction from juniors Taylor Ann Holgate and Marc Seelinger, who lost bids for Student Congress in Tuesday’s election.

Candidate Shruti Shah joins Medlin in the runoff election, to be held next week.

The popular male frontrunner gets more than 40 percent of the vote. His large campaign staff is thrilled to head into a runoff against the female candidate who won a much smaller portion of the vote. The eliminated candidates begin to throw their support behind her campaign, with the hope of upsetting the frontrunner.

It’s 2009 all over again.

Forty-one new members of Student Congress were elected to serve in the 2010-11 legislative branch of student government on Tuesday night.

Congress allocates money through an annual budget process and throughout the year during the subsequent appropriations process. Congress allocated about $364,000 during the 2009-10 annual budget.

After running an unopposed campaign in this year’s student election, Laura Blue finally claimed victory Tuesday as president of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation.

The third-year doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry said she is excited to represent graduate students on a campus dominated by undergraduates. She said she wants to get the word out about GPSF.
