Eagle Stas Swerdzewski hit a one-out single and was replaced on the base paths by Brian Snyder. Todd Friedman then doubled to left-center putting runners on seconds and third.
UNC coach Mike Fox pulled Dennis Robinson for Daniel Moore. Moore immediately struck out pinch hitter Ben Thurmond but then gave up the game-winning single to Winthrop freshman Carlos de la Rionado.
The Eagles (23-5-1) jumped on the board in the second inning on a Bennett Stapf homer. UNC starter Ralph Roberts gave up two runs in five innings of work in his first career start for UNC.
The Tar Heels (17-12) tied the score in the fourth inning when sophomore Sean Farrell smacked a home run down the left field line. Farrell went 3-for-4 on the evening. The 1-1 score didn't last long as de la Rionado ripped an RBI triple to score Jon Gore in the bottom of the fifth.
North Carolina travels to Raleigh this weekend to face ACC foe N.C. State. The series begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Doak Field.
