TO THE EDITOR:
I want to thank The Daily Tar Heel for the total lack of support they've given to the baseball team this year. The DTH has continually chosen to highlight the negative, rather than lauding the accomplishments of our young team ("Pitchers Struggle to Find Control" March 20).
In the young season, the Tar Heel's varsity baseball team has won six one-run ball games. We've come from behind for a total of nine wins.
As for our pitching staff, it is unfair for the DTH to criticize one part of our team as being solely responsible for the shortcomings of the unit as a whole. In fact, our Earned Run Average as a team this year is only slightly higher than the national Division I average of 5.56 last year. In addition, our opponents have a combined ERA of 6.69 -- substantially higher than our own.
We as a team stand behind our pitching staff as they continue to mature and fulfill their formidable potential.
