According to police reports, the cyclist, Anne Datilgren of Carrboro, was traveling on East Weaver Street between North Greensboro Street and Roberson Street when a truck approached in the same travel lane. James Thomas Edwards Sr., 76, was driving the 1970 truck that struck Datilgren.
As the truck proceeded down East Weaver Street, the vehicle collided with the bicycle. The rider then fell to the ground, causing minor injuries to her right forearm and ankle, reports state.
Carrboro police responded to the accident at 11:47 a.m, reports state. Orange County emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and treated the cyclist for minor cuts and scrapes. The responding officer then took the woman to her residence, reports state.
Reports also state that Edwards was traveling below the posted speed limit of 25 mph when he hit the cyclist and that the case is closed with no further citations against the driver, reports state.
Capt. Joel Booker of the Carrboro Police Department said the incident is an example of the need to exercise care when traveling in downtown. "All we can ask is that people slow down and use extreme caution in the area."
