Alvis Baldwin Jr. and his wife, Panella, lost nearly everything they owned when their house at 1703 Purefoy Drive went up in flames while they were out for the afternoon.
Panella is a crossing guard at McDougle Elementary School and Alvis is a crossing guard at Carrboro Elementary School.
After the Dec. 27 blaze, Carrboro police opened up the police department to clothing, appliances and other donations.
Capt. John Butler said the cause of the fire is still unknown but is not suspicious.
"(The Baldwins) don't know what caused it because they were at the grocery store when it happened," he said. "They came home to find the firefighters putting out the ashes. They lost everything they own. All they have is what they have on their backs."
Butler said the drive is going surprisingly well for the elderly couple.
"People have been very generous," he said. "We've gotten a few clothes."
The Baldwins are living in an extended stay motel until they are able to rebuild a home on their property.
Butler said the couple owns the burned home and plans to have it cleared from the land as soon as possible.
