"Rule of The Bone," Russell Banks

"The People vs. Larry Flynt" Though featuring impressive performances by Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson and a wild breakthrough by Courtney Love, this film has garnered only a cult following. In a look at the life and trials of "Hustler" founder Larry Flynt, director Milos Forman captures the angst, energy and controversy surrounding his life. With superb acting and sharp writing, this film -- and Flynt's life -- is more about freedom of speech and press than pornography.

"Choke," Chuck Palahniuk Although written by the author of "Fight Club," this book does not hold the same energy, social controversy and action as its well-known predecessor, but it shocks and pleases for different reasons. "Choke" is the story of a sexaholic searching for respite and individuality in self-denial and loathing. "Choke" is darkly humorous, addictive and filled with Palahniuk's unique blend of modern slang and amazing writing. It will suck you in and leave you feeling dirty yet happy -- it even tells how to have sex on a airplane, with anybody.
