When I read Johanna Costa's column on the election of Jen Daum as student body president, I thought that maybe Costa was being a bit too harsh on Daum.
However, reading about the vandalism that occurred at the apartment of the campaign manager for Will McKinney, and the way Daum reacted to it made me wonder if Costa was indeed correct in calling Daum "a flaky female."
While McKinney reacted to the situation by admitting that he could not be a 100 percent sure that the people responsible for the vandalism were not his supporters who were out to malign Daum, Daum outright denied that her campaigners had anything to do with the incident.
The hastiness and shallowness of Daum's reaction alone brings up questions about her capability of leading the student body and making well-thought out, responsible decisions that will affect the lives of thousands of undergraduate and graduate students over the next year. Will she even consider the pros and cons of suggestions by her Cabinet members that contradict her ideas?
I don't know McKinney personally to take his side, and neither do I grudge Daum her victory. In fact, I am proud that a female was elected student body president, even though I was sick of having fliers shoved in my face numerous times asking me to vote for Jen Daum because she would be only the third female student body president in the 209 years of this university.
However, I hope that the non-seniors who were part of the 53 percent that voted for Daum knew what they were opting for.
