Softball Nabs 2 Comeback Victories

Highlighted by a pair of sixth-inning rallies, the Tar Heels came from behind to win both games of a doubleheader against Tennessee-Chattanooga at the UNC Softball Complex.

In the first game, the Lady Mocs played small-ball to get runs in each of the first two innings, then entrusted the game to ace pitcher Beth Alexander (13-4). UNC's two-through-five hitters struggled, combining to go just 1-for-8 in the first game against Alexander.

But the Tar Heels (21-15) managed an unearned run in the second and tied the game on pinch hitter Ashley Allen's RBI single in the fourth.

UT-C (20-10) had its share of opportunities to break the game open, but North Carolina starter Shannon Walsh (9-7) pitched her best with runners on base, stranding 12 Lady Mocs in the game.

Designated player Jessica Young gave the Tar Heels the lead for good with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning.

"Earlier in the game I had opportunities to score two runs and I failed, so it was good to put us back on top," Young said.

Determined to put themselves back on top, the Lady Mocs came out blazing in the second game.

Defensive lapses by the Tar Heels resulted in three runs in the top of the first, and UT-C added three more on a homer by Jill Crawford in the second.

UNC pitcher Erica Ennis (3-4) relieved game-two starter Allen in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Mocs threatened again in the third. With two outs, UT-C loaded the bases, but Ennis got cleanup hitter Jada Pescutore to ground out to shortstop to stop the rally.

"Erica's ball was really moving down nicely today," said UNC coach Donna Papa. "She got a lot of ground balls, and our defense made nice plays behind her."

The Tar Heels didn't let Ennis' efforts go to waste. They chipped away at the UT-C lead, cutting it to 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by Young on which both Rosie Gustavson and Quinn Porter tagged and scored.

But most of the damage again came in the sixth inning. Ennis helped her own cause with a leadoff double, and the next five batters reached safely. Gustavson tied the game at seven with a two-run single, and Porter followed it up with a game-winning, two-run double to the gap in right-center field.

After the game, the Tar Heels were nonplussed about the comeback.

Said Ennis,"We've been down by more than six runs at times this season and come back to win, so being down 6-1 was no big deal today."
