8 Former UNC Athletes Taken in Weekend Drafts

Saturday, UNC defensive linemen Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims were two of the first six players picked in the draft. It was the first time two Tar Heels have been selected in the top 10 in the same year.

"I'm excited for both Julius and Ryan," said head coach John Bunting. "They are both great people and both have great futures ahead of them in the NFL."

Sunday, North Carolina linebacker David Thornton was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the draft's fourth round. Thornton was the eighth pick in the fourth round, the 106th overall selection.

Three Tar Heels were selected in the seventh round. Defensive end Joey Evans was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 219th overall pick, quarterback Ronald Curry was chosen by the Oakland Raiders with the 235th pick and linebacker Quincy Monk was selected by the New York Giants with the 245th choice overall.

Teasley Picked No. 5 in WNBA Draft

UNC senior Nikki Teasley was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks Friday after being selected by Portland with the fifth pick of the WNBA Draft.

Teasley and forward Sophia Witherspoon went to L.A. for guard Ukari Figgs and second-round pick Gergana Slavtcheva.

"I'm shocked but happy," Teasley said. "I really like the Los Angeles staff and the fact they're the defending champions."

In Los Angeles, she'll team with Jackie Higgins, who played for UNC in 1999 and 2000 before leaving school to play professionally and was selected by the Sparks in the second round of Friday's draft (32nd overall). Higgins played in Switzerland last winter.
