TO THE EDITOR:
I would like to respectfully disagree with The Daily Tar Heel's editorial stance that an Office of LGBTQ Life and Study on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus is unnecessary or unfair.
Instances of gay bashing and other forms of homophobia are common in our society and happen even on this wonderful campus. A University-sponsored Office of LGBTQ Life and Study would provide a much-needed source of information, networking and programming for our LGBTQ faculty, staff and students -- indeed, for anyone interested in learning more about LGBTQ issues.
As a faculty member, I would find such a resource extremely helpful in identifying ways in which I might make all of my students feel more welcome, understood and accepted. I applaud the University administration's initial support of an Office of LGBTQ Life and Study and hope the DTH will reconsider its position on this issue.
