Stereotyping Anyone Is Outdated Practice, Ignores Individual

I have been working at the Student Union for about two years now. In that time I have come to befriend an eclectic group of great people with hearts that are almost as big as their mouths. From Chi Psi fraternity brothers with great senses of humor to UNC women rugby players with Morehead scholarships, I have laughed, eaten, cried and even watched meteor showers with these fine people. By way of these diverse friendships I have come to see the subtle stains that stereotypes and generalizations can leave smeared all over our minds and perceptions.

With that being said, I was excited when I saw that Amanda Fox finally brought into light the chip that rests comfortably on (columnist) Tiffanie Dayton's shoulder. Stereotyping white people, or any ethnic group, is quickly becoming a rusty mental tool that many use in order to validate their expectations of others. We all are friends with people who do not fit their "proper" roles in terms of race, gender, sexuality or what have you.

Fox's words were mine throughout her article. But I unfortunately became embarrassed for accepting her words within her closing. In the last paragraph Fox takes her argument, throws it into the garbage and sadly becomes just another victim of the generalizations she is trying to denounce.
