In response to the article that ranked UNC sixth in terms of diversity, I feel that it must be taken with a grain of salt. When we are speaking in terms of diversity we must keep a clear perspective of what criteria was used to create the ranking. If you are talking sheer numbers of student and faculty enrollment then fine, UNC might have the numbers.
Conversely, when discussing the quality of University life for students and faculty of color then you are discussing something much different and, as far as I am concerned, much more important.
I think is it misleading to publicize UNC as sixth in terms of diversity, because the natural assumption would be that UNC provides the sixth best college experience for black students and faculty, and that is clearly not the case.
I will support a ranking of "sixth" when I see UNC ranking "sixth" in terms of the number of black graduates, the retention of black students throughout the undergraduate years, the number of black students that move on to graduate/professional level study and the number of black tenured faculty.
Until I see UNC progressing on that platform, let's not jump the gun with a ranking as high as sixth on the plate of diversity.
