Student Body President Jen Daum said any members who planned to run or campaign for an office would have to resign to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
The five resigning members were Jordan Campbell, chairman of minority affairs; Neal Chandoke, chairman of human relations; Nathan Cherry, executive assistant to the vice president; Brad Overcash, communications director; and Kim Turner, executive assistant to the treasurer.
Campbell, a junior, resigned to work on his own campaign for senior class president.
He said he considered running for student body president but said the position is too large a load in combination with his coursework.
Campbell has been planning to run for office since his sophomore year, he said. "I have a passion for politics," he said. "I believe in the trickle-down effect -- I want to affect the most amount of people possible."
Chandoke, a senior, resigned from his position to help with Campbell's campaign. Chandoke, who ran for senior class vice president last year, said his experience would help Campbell.
"I know the beast he's about to encounter," he said. "I want to help ease his load."
Cherry, a junior, submitted his resignation in order to work on his own campaign for student body president.
He said he is disappointed to leave his Cabinet position because this year's group is strong.
