The game's only goal came 15:20 into the match, when Virginia's Katie Nicholson took pass from Cara Unterkofler and tipped it past UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran.

On Saturday, the Tar Heels fell to No. 8 James Madison 4-3. UNC built an early 2-0 lead, but the Dukes tied the score at 2 just before halftime.

James Madison took the lead for good in the 45th minute with a goal from Carrie Phillips, and added another in the 50th minute from Elize van Ballegooie.

UNC's Karen Mann pushed a rebound past JMU goalkeeper Kiernan Raffo with seven minutes to play, but the Tar Heels could not get any closer.

Women's Soccer Outlasts Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. -- It has not been an easy week for the No. 1 North Carolina women's soccer team.

After losing to N.C. State 2-1 on Thursday, the Tar Heels needed double overtime Saturday to defeat 19th-ranked Clemson 2-1.

North Carolina midfielder Lori Chalupny scored the game-winning goal at 106:51, lifting the Tar Heels to 11-1-2 (1-1 in the ACC). Clemson fell to 8-5 (2-2).

"When you win a game like that you have to have a little luck," said UNC coach Anson Dorrance.

Clemson dominated North Carolina in the first half, outshooting the Tar Heels 9-5 and gaining a 1-0 lead at the break.

But after halftime, the Tar Heels took over the game. Clemson took only one shot in the second half and overtime, while the Tar Heels launched 12 shots during the same time.

UNC's Maggie Tomecka tied the game 1-1 in the 51st minute, and Chalupny's overtime goal sealed the win.

Men's Soccer Loses 1-0 at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Commonwealth defender Gonzalo Segares scored in the 24th minute, guiding the Rams to a 1-0 win against 24th-ranked North Carolina on Saturday. With the win, VCU improves to 7-3 on the season, while UNC falls to 8-5.

Segares' goal came from 25 yards out to the left of the penalty box. He floated a ball to the top right corner of the net, beating Tar Heel goalkeeper Ford Williams.

The Rams made the lead stand up, posting their fifth shutout of the season.
