Morehead Parking Lot Gate 1st of Many

Gating projects begun on many campus parking lots during the summer are nearing completion, said Cheryl Stout, assistant director of parking services.

"So far, the (Department of Public Safety) and Morehead lots are the only ones that have been gated," Stout said. "But the others are all in progress and nearing completion."

A list of lots to be gated was generated last February by Derek Poarch, director of DPS. Officials chose to gate specific lots based on the number of parking violations. Ten lots with large amounts of violations were chosen to discourage illegal parking.

The other lots that soon will be gated are Porthole, 440 North and South, Cobb, Connor and the Paul Green Theatre and Bennett parking lots.

"There was a great need from the Morehead Planetarium and the Johnston Center for monitoring their visitor parking," Stout said. "It has been done manually before, but now that the gates are up, parking will be much easier to monitor."

Gated lots also were created to add a supplemental income to make up for budget shortfalls in the parking department, Poarch said.

Parking in the Morehead lot is available to faculty, staff and visitors only, Stout said. Permits cost $436 per semester, and visitor parking is available for $1 per hour.

The gates will be manned every day from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the lot is open for free public parking.

Stout couldn't give an exact date for the completion of the gating of other lots but said most should be finished by the end of this month.
