Today

- 11 a.m. -- The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Kenan-Flagler Business School are sponsoring a blood drive until 3:30 p.m. Appointments are encouraged. Please contact Christopher Harris at charris@unc.edu. All donors will receive a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich and $5 off Domino's pizza.

-3:30 p.m. -- There will be a book reading at Bull's Head Bookshop until 5 p.m. with local author Gwendoline Fortune. Fortune, a historian and sociologist, reads from her new novel, "Growing Up Nigger Rich." It is a fictional novel; however, it deals with factual events and social situations about women, racism and a rare look at a wealthy clan of blacks within South Carolina. It portrays a family who even in the 1930s and '40s attained a college education. This truly gripping novel encompasses class distinctions within black society. Fortune is a sixth-generation college graduate. See http://zenarts.com/gunr for more details.

-4 p.m. -- Live, learn, and explore this summer on the Kyoto Summer Program in Japanese culture. Come learn about this new intensive monthlong summer program led by UNC Professor Jan Bardsley in 117 Hanes Art Center. Participants will explore Japanese culture through coursework, field trips and activities shared with Japanese college students.
