He might not be a robot, but North Carolina senior swimmer Stephen Mohr has coordinated academics and athletics with an almost mechanical consistency during his past four years at UNC.
"They called him Johnny 5 because he came in freshman year with 63 hours," said teammate Reid Owen. "He was so smart it seemed like he could do anything, just like Johnny 5."
Since entering the Kenan-Flagler Business School as a sophomore, Mohr has held a nearly flawless academic record while double-majoring in business administration and economics.
Mohr currently holds a 3.934 cumulative GPA, one of the highest in the UNC athletic system, and received highest honors for his honors thesis on patent law.
He has also won Kenan-Flagler's Academic Excellence in Strategic Management Award and was accepted into the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society.
The same fire that drives Mohr to succeed in scholarly pursuits motivates him while he's working in the pool.
"He's truly a student of the sport. It kind of goes along with his academics," said distance coach Bill Tramel. "He's always analyzing his stroke technique and how to swim a race better. He's very detailed in how he goes about everything."
If Mohr is a student of the sport, he will be graduating with honors from UNC's swimming program.
In his time at Chapel Hill he has established himself as one of the top distance swimmers in the ACC and a team leader, earning a co-captainship this year.
