TO THE EDITOR:
Friday's (editorial cartoon) regarding President Bush's support for merit-based admissions deliberately evades the point!
It's rather discouraging that the artist is willing to sacrifice the real message -- that students should strive to achieve their academic best, rather than simply crying "discrimination" to gain entrance into universities -- for the sole purpose of ridiculing our commander-in-chief.
Even worse, however, is the fact that such a valuable message is glossed over merely to reiterate last year's pretzel debacle, in which papers across the country gleefully emphasized President Bush's difficulties masticating snack foods.
Get over it!
The Daily Tar Heel has also had a field day with the infamous "pretzel incident" in a thinly veiled attempt at denying our president's credibility for the sake of mockery.
It's time that the members at the DTH focused on what the man says rather than succumbing to the shallow, media-based attempts to portray Bush as socially inept.
After all, there's a reason well over half the country -- including the pretzel industry -- supports the man.
