DiPhi to Host Debate About Value Of Compulsory Military Service

TO THE EDITOR:

Margaux Escutin's article "Proposed Bill Would Restore Draft" regarding Rep. Charles Rangel's bill informed UNC of an important topic relevant to college students. After all, it was our age group during the Vietnam era which made the draft a significant debate in American history. Today key American allies -- such as Israel and South Korea -- continue the practice. That the draft has played such a significant role in recent American history and that it continues to do so abroad makes Mr. Rangel's proposition an important point of debate.

Thus I invite students and the University community to formally discuss the issue today with the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies on the top floor of New West building. The debate for that night will be "Resolved: Nations should institute compulsory military service." The societies have been present to discuss the draft question every time it has come up on American soil and would be honored to host campuswide discussion of it as our nation encounters it yet again.
