Board of Aldermen approves construction permit freeze

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously approved Tuesday a moratorium on applications for permits to construct buildings of more than two stories on certain properties that are close to residential property.

The ordinance will last for 60 days and apply to 25 properties on the fringe of the commercial district.

The moratorium will allow a town subcommittee to complete a plan to create a buffer zone between neighborhoods and tall buildings.

$10,000 in property stolen from Chapel Hill residence

More than $10,000 in property was stolen from a Kenan Street residence Monday morning, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, residents at 116 Kenan St. woke up to find that an unknown suspect had entered the house through a locked rear door and had taken a camera, $200 cash, a bookbag and three laptops.

Police spokeswoman Jane Cousins said pry marks on the door indicate that a screwdriver might have been used to disable the lock. Police have no suspects and the investigation is ongoing, Cousins said.

Local police officer assaulted twice during past weekend

Carrboro police officer Stephen Champion was assaulted while on duty on two separate occasions during the weekend, Carrboro police reports state.

The first incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. Saturday when Champion and several other officers responded to a fight at 112 N.C. 54, reports state.

Reports state that two men were fighting when officers arrived and attempted to break them up.

Champion was pushed and wrestled while attempting to restrain one of the suspects, reports state.

Reports state Cedrick Tart, 29, was charged with two misdemeanors in connection with the incident: resist, delay and obstruct and assault on a law enforcement official.

The second assault occurred at 2 p.m. Sunday during a disturbance call at 124 Fidelity St., reports state.

According to reports, Champion was kicked in the wrist while attempting to apply handcuffs, resulting in a cut hand and punctured wrist, and was struck on the side of the head with a belt.

Kenneth Wade Sigmon, who struck Champion, was detained and charged with three misdemeanors: assaulting a government official; resist, delay and obstruct; and disorderly conduct by abusive language.

Car stereos stolen during 5 Chapel Hill car break-ins

According to Chapel Hill police reports, $750 in car stereos were reported stolen Monday in five reported incidents of breaking and entering into a vehicle.

Car windows were smashed in two of the incidents, windows were pried open in two of the incidents, and a lock bypass tool was used in the other, reports state.

Three of the five incidents occurred off of South Estes Drive and might be related, reports state.
