Freshman arrested, charged with multiple drug violations

A UNC freshman was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, two counts of felony possession of schedule II drugs and one count of misdemeanor manufacturing of schedule IV drugs, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, Joshua Blake Caldwell, 20, was arrested at 2424 Granville Towers South on warrants taken out earlier that day.

Reports did not indicate for which drugs Caldwell was arrested, but Sgt. Steve Riddle of Chapel Hill police said that schedule II drugs include "strong opiate-based narcotics with minimal medicinal uses."

According to the North Carolina Controlled Substances Act, schedule II drugs include cocaine, codeine, hyrdocodone, opium and methamphetamines.

Riddle said lower schedule numbers indicate a stronger effect on the body, with less medicinal potential.

Caldwell was released on a written promise to appear today in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.

2 Army privates arrested for drunk, disruptive behavior

Two U.S. Army privates stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville were arrested at 2:43 a.m. Sunday and charged with being drunk and disruptive and carrying a concealed weapon, both misdemeanors, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, Mathew Keith Bruce, 20, and Michael Anthony Monaco, 20, were using profanity, hitting and pushing one another and trying to start fights with unknown people walking down the sidewalk.

The two also were carrying brass knuckles, reports state.

They will appear Jan. 24 in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.

Vehicle break-in results in $800 stereo equipment theft

A vehicle break-in was reported at 4:45 p.m. Friday in the N.C. 54 park-and-ride lot, resulting in the theft of $800 in stereo equipment, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, the driver's side rear window was broken, and a CD player and amplifier were stolen.

Damage to the teal 1998 Ford Ranger totaled $100, reports state.

$2,300 in electronics stolen from Church Street home

A break-in at a residence at 307 Church St. early Saturday morning resulted in the theft of $2,300 in electronic equipment, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, the suspect stole both an IBM laptop and a digital camera from a UNC student.

The break-in occurred at 3 a.m. and did not involve force, reports state.

Nothing stolen Saturday in Merritt Mill Road burglary

A burglary occurred early Saturday morning at a residence at 715 Merritt Mill Road, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, the suspect gained entry to the residence while it was occupied.

No force was used in the burglary, which occurred at 1 a.m., and nothing was reported stolen, reports state.
