A groundskeeper for the town of Carrboro was arrested at 9:25 a.m. Monday and charged with felony larceny by an employee and resist, delay and obstruct - a misdemeanor - for stealing a chain saw valued at $550 from the town's Department of Public Works, Carrboro police reports state.

According to reports, the chain saw was reported stolen Nov. 11, and the investigation led to Phillip Owen Jones, 39, of 4802 Old U.S. 1 in Moncure.

When the police tried to serve the warrant for larceny, he reportedly ran, resulting in the addition of the misdemeanor charge.

Jones was taken to Orange County Jail to be held on a $500 secured bond.

He was to appear at the first opportunity Monday at Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.

Police search for man who tried to cash counterfeit bill

In an incident of forgery and uttering that led to assault, an unknown suspect tossed items off a gas station counter at the clerk who refused to cash a fake $20 bill, Carrboro police reports state.

According to reports, the incident occurred at 9:50 a.m. Monday at the Kangaroo Express at 500 Jones Ferry Road.

When the clerk determined the bill was fake, he told the suspect that he was going to have to confiscate it and call the police, reports state.

The suspect became upset and threw several items off the counter and fled eastbound on foot toward the Ridgewood Apartments, reports state.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-8-inch black man with a slim build and short black hair, reports state. He reportedly was wearing a tan shirt and jeans at the time of the incident.

Police are continuing to investigate.

3 arrested, charged with possession of stolen vehicle

While responding to an unconnected report of tire larceny, Chapel Hill police recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested three Durham men in connection to its possession, reports state.

According to reports, the vehicle, a green 1993 Chevy Cavalier, was recovered at 9:15 p.m. Monday off Boulder Lane near Shadylawn Road.

The vehicle attracted the police's attention because it also was missing a tire. After running the license number, they determined it was stolen in Durham.

Investigations led police to Ty-Quan I-Dree Glenn, 21; Quarion I-Dre Glenn, 17; and Jahlil Rahman Jones, 18. Each was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The three were taken to Orange County Jail to be held each on a $3,000 secured bond.

A juvenile from Chapel Hill was also taken into custody in relation to the incident, reports state.
