Ticket distribution system doesn't serve students well

TO THE EDITOR:

I am writing on behalf of students, who I feel have not been treated well in the recent basketball ticket distribution.

We understand that there is a finite number of student tickets, because the Department of Athletics has sold itself to the alumni. However, I ask the Carolina Athletic Association to communicate better with students.

It would have been nice to know in advance that there were less than the usual 4,000 student tickets for the distribution so that those with bracelet numbers with no chance of receiving tickets didn't have to waste five hours Saturday morning.

Why doesn't CAA publish the number of tickets available before the distribution? If this is not possible, they should at least know how many tickets are available on the actual day of distribution - and thus keep the students informed - because CAA is supposed to represent us.

Also, how many student tickets does CAA allot to its own members as a reward for their resume-building experience? I suspect that, despite paying the same in student fees, they guarantee themselves lower-level seating.

For a University purported to be a basketball school, students get the short end of the stick with regard to tickets.

True college basketball atmospheres, like the one that takes place nine miles away, involve students, unlike our "wine and cheese"-only crowd.
