Attorney to seek reduction of accused murderer’s bonds

Orange-Chatham Public Defender James Williams will seek a reduction in the bonds on which Andrew Douglas Dalzell is being held in Orange County Jail.

District Attorney Carl Fox said Thursday that Williams would seek the reduction in Orange County Superior Court on Jan. 25.

Dalzell has been charged with second-degree murder in the disappearance and presumed death of Carrboro resident Deborah Leigh Key. He is being held on a secured bond of $70,000 for the charge.

Dalzell also is being held on a separate $20,000 secured bond on six counts of felony exploitation of a minor, based on evidence found on his computer following his arrest on the murder charge in September.

 

Man to appear in court on multiple break-in charges

A man arrested in November in connection with eight area break-ins appeared in Orange County District Criminal Court on Thursday.

Anthony Jerome Dukes, 46, was arrested Nov. 11 on 18 charges, including misdemeanor and felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor injury to property.

The three misdemeanor charges of injury to real property and a felony county of breaking and entering of a vehicle were dismissed Thursday.

Dukes will appear Jan. 25 in Orange County Superior Court on the remaining charges — including felony first degree burglary and felony larceny.

 

Carrboro man arrested after hitting police officer with car

A Carrboro man was arrested at 8 p.m. Wednesday and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, felony speeding to elude arrest, misdemeanor reckless driving and misdemeanor speeding, Carrboro police reports state.

According to reports, Marcus Freeman Rogers, 23, of 104 Hatch Road, was seen by police at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday going 65 mph in a 45 mph zone on the N.C. 54 bypass.

Officers stopped him and ran a check on his license, showing four pending cases of trafficking marijuana, reports state.

When officers asked him to turn off his ignition, he put the car in gear and fled, striking an officer in the left leg, reports state. Officers called off the chase and obtained warrants, which were served later that day.

Rogers was released on a written promise to appear Thursday in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.

 

UNC student charged with possession, DWI on Thursday

A UNC student was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated at 3 a.m. Thursday, Chapel Hill police reports state.

According to reports, senior Wallace Fitzhugh Holladay III, 22, was arrested after a traffic stop on Airport Road. Holladay is a staff member of The Daily Tar Heel.

He was released on a written promise to appear Feb. 15 in Orange County District Criminal Court in Hillsborough.
