Carrboro selects equipment for Baldwin Park playground

The town of Carrboro has selected playground equipment to install at Baldwin Park on Broad Street, based on resident feedback received over the last few months.

The equipment features two slides, swinging rings, a crunch bar and a steering wheel.

Town Facilities Administrator Kokeita Miller said the town hopes to have the equipment installed by the start of next fiscal year, July 1.

 

Chapel Hill High student named scholarship finalist

A Chapel Hill High School student has been named a finalist for the National Achievement Scholarship.

Mallory Mpare, a senior, is one of 1,300 finalists, of whom 800 will become designees.

The National Achievement Scholarship is specifically for black students, and candidates, like those for the National Merit Scholarship, apply by taking the PSAT exam.

Students may enter both programs but may only receive funds from one. National Achievement Scholarship winners receive a $2,500 award.

 

Local teacher tapped as choice for national award

City schools teacher Vicki Dawkins has been awarded the 2005 Teacher of Excellence Award from the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children.

The council now will nominate Dawkins to become the International Council for Exceptional Children’s nominee for the Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year Award.

Dawkins was named the 2000-01 Teacher of the Year at McDougle Elementary, where she works with severely developmentally disabled students.
