Community shelter to debut public art project today

A piece of public art will be unveiled at the Inter-Faith Council community shelter today as part of National Volunteer Week.

The dedication ceremony for the mosaic, titled “The Fine Line Between Giving and Receiving,” begins at 1:30 p.m. at the shelter, located at 100 W. Rosemary St.

The artwork was created by artist Sally Erickson and was funded by the town’s Percent for Art Program, which gives 1 percent of public project budgets to public art. The open house will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Commissioners to review budget, capital funding

The Orange County Board of Commissioners will hold a work session tonight to look at budget and capital funding issues.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Government Services Center in Hillsborough.

The commissioners are scheduled to discuss the proposed ratio shift in capital funding, now devoting only 60 percent of funds to county schools; capital funding needs; and funding equity in school budgets.

Carrboro aldermen, NCDOT consider Smith Level project

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen met with members of the N.C. Department of Transportation last week to discuss the proposed widening of Smith Level Road — a project 20 years in the making.

NCDOT officials have told the aldermen that it might be possible to cap project costs at $300,000 if the town decides to go forward with the Moving Ahead program.

The entire project would install sidewalks and bike and turn lanes from the Morgan Creek bridge to Rock Haven Road and would take about two years to complete.

If the town decides to use the Transportation Improvement Project funding, it would cost the town little but could take an extra five to seven years. This plan would include a three-lane cross section, sidewalks and bike lanes.

The aldermen have planned to discuss the Smith Level Road project at next week’s meeting. Once a decision is reached, NCDOT will begin drawing up plans.
