Classes shifting back to Venable

  • Classes in Chapman 125 will be in Venable 308.
  • Classes in Chapman 201 will be held in Venable 207.
  • Classes in Chapman 211 will be housed in Venable 268. Officials found out several weeks ago that Chapman 125, a seminar room that holds about 100 students, would be affected. They discovered this week that the other rooms, auditoriums that hold about 200 students, also would be offline. Holden Thorp, chairman of the department of chemistry, said affected students have been notified by e-mail. There also will be signs posted in Chapman and registrar officials updated Student Central to reflect the changes, Keefe said. Courses in Chapman 201 and 211 hopefully will be shifted back soon after Labor Day, said Peter Krawchyk, assistant director for facilities planning, who is project manager for Chapman. He said classes in Chapman 125 likely will begin a week or two after that. The projects nearly are finished, but some audio visual equipment and wiring still must be completed. "If we're off by a few weeks that's probably a tolerable thing," Thorp said. "We had Venable ready as a backup in case that happened." Chemistry students aren't the only ones this semester who will find themselves taking classes in unexpected buildings. Forty-four classes will meet in makeshift classrooms located in buildings such as Davis Library and South Campus residence halls because of construction crunches. In the past UNC officials even resorted to using the now defunct Carolina Theater as a classroom. "From a professor's point of view, it wasn't ideal," said Bobbi Owen, senior associate dean for undergraduate education. "But within the first week we had things worked out."
