The Orange County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday to receive updates about a proposed solid waste transfer station and management plan and to further discuss plans for Habitat for Humanity's Sunrise Ridge affordable housing development.
Waste transfer station
Gayle Wilson, the county's solid waste management director, updated the commissioners about a possible 4.5-acre transfer station off Eubanks Road.
Jan Sassaman, a member of the Solid Waste Advisory Board, said the commissioners should make a decision soon about the site selection and acquisition of the transfer station because of the existing municipal solid waste landfill's expectation of reaching capacity in a few years.
The four commissioners present decided to place the issue on the agenda for the Nov. 14 meeting.
"They didn't bowl me over to make a decision tonight," commissioner Moses Carey said.
Waste management plan
Blair Pollock, solid waste planner for the county, proposed a study that will research how much waste Orange County produces and the cost efficiency of hauling the waste to another site.
Board chairman Barry Jacobs returned to the idea of construction of a transfer station, expressing concern about its implementation before such a study is completed, citing financial concerns.
