Survival guide for laptops

  • Back up your data and documents. Computers fail. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when. Think about how much time went into that 20-page research paper. With a few clicks of your mouse, you could lose it all in a hard drive crash. Protect it by ordering a data backup service like Iron Mountain or by protecting your data manually using solutions such as CDs, DVDs, USB drives, iPods and e-mail. For more information about backing up your data, visit help.unc.edu/?id=141.
  • Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. If you have a CCI machine, you also have the Symantec AntiVirus program that automatically protects your computer. If not, visit shareware.unc.edu where you can obtain the anti-virus software for free. If you need assistance with the download or installation, just call 962-HELP.
  • Be suspicious of e-mail attachments. Yes, even from your best friend's computer, which can send you a virus without your friend having any knowledge of it. Be suspicious. If the attachment rings warning bells, call 962-HELP, and the help desk can help you determine whether or not the attachment is carrying a virus.
  • Run Spybot/Ad-Aware once a week. Running either or both of these programs will keep you free and clear of Internet spy programs that seek out your computer to monitor where you go and what sites you are visiting. The spy programs can also really slow down your computer. Both Spybot and Ad-Aware are available for free. To learn more, call 962-HELP.
  • Don't share or download stolen illegal music or videos. If you do, you can be traced and will have to answer the consequences. Ruckus offers UNC students free legal downloads. To learn more, visit www.ruckus.com.
  • Limit how much "free" software you download. AIM, iTunes, WeatherBug - and how many others do you have in startup mode? Too many will use up your computer's resources and slow it down. Need assistance figuring out what's in start-up mode? Call 962-HELP.
  • Take care of your computer. Four years is a long time for a laptop to survive the wear and tear it will get. Campuses are one of the hardest environments for laptops. That's why CCI laptops have extended warranties. Treat it gently. Don't throw it around, get it wet or move it while the hard drive is still running. It is a vital tool that will enhance your time at Carolina. And remember, ITS is always here 2-HELP. Get answers to your information technology questions and concerns. Send comments and questions to ITS Communications at its_communications@unc.edu.
