TO THE EDITOR:
Last Tuesday's editorial on housekeeping issues (Time for honesty openness" Oct. 14) displayed a misunderstanding of the situation between housekeepers and the administration.
It would be wonderful if we had a safe environment in which housekeepers could voice their opinions and concerns, but unfortunately there are no laws in North Carolina that allow public sector workers like the dorm housekeepers the security necessary to do so.
The housekeepers need stable contracts that ensure secure jobs if they are to speak out about issues in the workplace.
North Carolina needs to repeal the racist statute banning collective bargaining for public sector workers. The United Nations has condemned our state for denying our workers this right. When our state and University acknowledge the right of workers perhaps then will workers be forthcoming about what exactly their issues are.""
