The Daily Tar Heel

Price advertisement was misleading inappropriate

TO THE EDITOR:

U.S. Rep. David Price's recent advertisement in The Daily Tar Heel asserts that his opponent in this election" B.J. Lawson opposes: abortion" ""even in the cases of rape and incest;"" the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Credit; the addition of sexual orientation to already existing hate crime and nondiscrimination statutes; and the tax-exemption of employer-provided health insurance. The Price campaign clearly intends to imply that Dr. Lawson is a homophobic" misogynist bigot who hates poor people and the uninsured.

There is absolutely no record of him making any of these direct statements on abortion the EITC CCC and employer non-discrimination. The ad lies about his view on tax exemptions for employer-provided health care which the health care page on Dr. Lawson's Web site confirms that he supports along with the same exemption of consumer health insurance.

It's ads like this that poison our political culture and deter constructive discussion and progressive action on the tough issues we face. Congressman Price has apparently ignored the calls by Sen. (Barack) Obama for an elevated discourse and trans-partisan approach to politics.

Congressman Price has demonstrated himself to be a willing participant in this unduly bitter and corrupt environment. He deserves to be fired by the voters of the 4th District and replaced by Dr. Lawson who has demonstrated he will elevate our dialogue and reach out to those with whom he disagrees on particular issues.
